Polyrhythmic Grooves - 2011

These pieces use decorated polyrhythms to make a groove. The first piece, shown below, can be heard from three equally valid rhythmic perspectives: 5-8, 7-8 or 4-4. This means there are three ways to experience the patterns, depending on which one you use as your reference-point. These are not technically challenging to play for the musicians, but can be difficult to count. I developed the system as an exercise in feeling polyrhythms in a natural way. I am afraid the recording is only MIDI, but I am working on a better replacement.
